Help & Resources
Everything you need to know about planning your gallery wall. Learn how to manage inventory, arrange layouts, and export for installation.
Wall Setup
Start every project by defining the wall you're working with. Accurate dimensions ensure your on-screen layout maps to the real world.
- Dimensions & UnitsEnter your wall width and height in inches or centimeters. Switch between imperial and metric at any time — the unit system is saved per project. Walls can be up to 50 ft (15 m) per side.
- Wall TypesChoose Flat for a standard wall, or Staircase (Ascending / Descending) for angled walls above a stairway. Set the Rise (%) to match your measured slope.
- Wall ColorSet the background color to match your actual wall paint. This helps you preview how frames and photos will look in context.
Inventory & Frame Management
GalleryPlanner treats every frame as a physical entity in your personal "library," ensuring you never lose track of dimensions.
- Adaptive Grid InventoryThe sidebar shifts between list and grid views to maximize screen space. Frames on the wall are clearly marked "Placed." Search, sort (newest, oldest, size), and filter (unplaced, placed, portrait, landscape, square, round) to find what you need.
- 1:1 Manifest LogicEvery frame is accounted for individually. Removing a frame from the wall returns it to your "Unplaced" inventory rather than deleting it.
- Batch ImportingBatch import by pasting text (e.g., "8×10, 11×14") or uploading text files. Use the example template for the expected format.
- Starter LayoutsStart from curated wall arrangements in Frames → Add Frame → Layouts, then customize every frame.
- Locking & GroupingLock frames to prevent accidental edits. Group frames so they move, lock, and delete together. Available from the right-click menu, floating toolbar, or keyboard shortcuts.
- Aesthetics & CustomizationLabel frames (e.g., "Wedding Photo"), adjust matting borders that grow outward to preserve inner dimensions, customize frame and mat colors, and use Round/Oval frame shapes.
Photo Management
- Masonry Photo LibraryA high-efficiency masonry grid for managing all your uploaded photos. Adjust the thumbnail size from small to extra-large.
- Drag & Drop WorkflowDrag image files from your desktop onto the canvas or directly onto a frame to import and place them. You can also drag from the photo library sidebar. Photos stay local in your browser and are never uploaded to a server.
- Smart FillLet the AI engine analyze your photo library for composition, color, and resolution, then auto-place the best matches into your frames.
- Fine-Tuning & CroppingScale, position, and rotate images within their frames using the photo adjustment tab. Advanced cropping gives you precise visual control with a dedicated crop overlay, available with Pro.
Workspace Interaction
- Glass HUDOn-canvas controls for zoom (with 1:1 and Fit presets), background grid toggle, Eye Level guide, snap-to-grid toggle, and frame label toggle.
- Selection & AlignmentClick to select, Shift-click to multi-select, or click-drag a marquee. Alignment tools snap a single frame to the wall edge/center, or align multiple frames relative to each other (left, center, right, top, middle, bottom). Select 3 or more frames to also use Distribute — equalize the horizontal or vertical gaps between them in one click.
- Context MenuRight-click any frame for Cut/Copy, Lock/Unlock, Group/Ungroup, Auto-Fill, Rotate Photo, Remove Photo, and Delete. Right click the wall to change the background wall texture, paste cut/copied frames, quickly add standard frames, center all frames at eye-level (Pro), or select all frames.
- Floating Toolbar & Resize ModeSelecting one or more frames reveals a toolbar above the selection for quick access to common actions. Select a single frame and enable resize mode from the toolbar to drag any corner or edge handle directly on the canvas. Resize mode requires Pro.
- Layout Zones (Pro)Draw rectangular zones on your wall to constrain where Auto-Layout places frames. Useful for targeting a specific area of a large wall.
- Eye Level GuideA horizontal reference line at standard hanging height. Toggle it from the Glass HUD. Center at Eye Level (Pro) snaps your selection to this guide automatically.
Auto-Layout Engine
Don't suffer from "blank wall syndrome." Let the algorithms do the heavy lifting.
- Masonry (Tetris): Tightly packed, organic grid.
- Structured (Grid): Strict, uniform alignment.
- Skyline (Shelves): Bottom-aligned rows, great for mantels and ledges.
- Center Out (Spiral): Artistic, center-outward flow.
- Organic (Scatter): Randomized placement for a casual, collected-over-time feel.
- Tidy Up (Snap): Snaps your existing arrangement into cleaner alignment without rearranging.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions about GalleryPlanner.
Is GalleryPlanner really free?
Yes. Core planning is free forever with all creative tools. Pro unlocks additional features for serious planners — see What is GalleryPlanner Pro? for the full list.
Where are my photos stored?
Locally in your browser. We never upload your images to a server, so your photos stay private on your device. Browser storage is not the same as cloud backup, so use Export Project (.gwall) for important projects.
Can I use GalleryPlanner on my phone, tablet, or desktop?
Yes. GalleryPlanner is a responsive web app that works across desktops, tablets, and phones. On supported browsers you can install it as an app for quicker access. On iPhone and iPad, use Add to Home Screen from Safari. Installed access is convenient, but Export Project (.gwall) is still the safest way to protect important projects.
How do I print my layout?
Use Export (desktop) or the Share tab (mobile) to generate a print-ready Hanging Guide (PDF) with precise measurements. This feature requires GalleryPlanner Pro.
What if I switch computers or browsers?
Use Export Project (.gwall) to create a portable copy, then Import Project (.gwall) on any device or browser. The file includes your wall layout, library, photos, and analysis data. On mobile, tap the project name to open Project Switcher for Export/Import.
What is a .gwall file?
A .gwall file is a portable project copy created by Export Project. It packages your entire project — wall layout, frame library, photos, and Smart Fill analysis data — into a single file you can store in Files, iCloud, Drive, Dropbox, or anywhere else, or share with another device. Import Project opens it on any device or browser.
How do I undo a change?
Press Ctrl+Z (or ⌘Z on Mac) to undo, and Ctrl+Shift+Z (or ⌘Shift+Z) to redo. GalleryPlanner keeps up to 50 levels of undo per project for the duration of your browser session.
Can I change between inches and centimeters?
Yes. You can switch between imperial (inches) and metric (centimeters) at any time in Wall Settings. Your preferred unit system is saved per project and remembered for new projects.
How do I group frames together?
Select two or more frames, then right-click and choose Group, or press Ctrl+G (⌘G on Mac). Grouped frames move, lock, and delete together. To ungroup, right-click and choose Ungroup, or press Ctrl+Shift+G (⌘Shift+G).
Do I need to create an account?
You can start planning without an account. Create an account when you want to unlock and sync Pro access.
Can I plan for multiple walls at once?
Each project represents one wall. Free includes one editable project — you can still load an additional project as view-only. Pro unlocks editing across multiple projects.
What exactly is Smart Fill?
Smart Fill is an AI-powered engine that analyzes your photo library for composition, color, and resolution to place the best matches into your frames automatically. It is available on both free and Pro plans. Pro includes the Whole-wall balance feature.
How do I measure for a staircase wall?
In Wall Settings, select a Staircase wall type (Ascending or Descending), then set the Rise percentage to match your measured slope.
